Aquatics

《Aquatics》 is an immersive and thought-provoking art installation created by the German multidisciplinary artist Philipp Artus. It invites participants to embark on a transformative journey into the uncharted depths of the unexplored Abyss.

With an astonishing 90% of this vast frontier remaining unexplored, visitors are encouraged to unleash the boundless depths of their creativity by sculpting wondrous and otherworldly deep-sea creatures. Guided by an intuitive interface, they can select the type and number of species, determine their size, shape, colour, and behaviour. The sum of these individual choices forms the basis for the resulting outcome, making the artwork a shared experience of creative expression.

Venturing deeper into the abyss, participants find themselves enveloped in virtual environments that mirror the hidden mysteries of these unexplored realms. Illuminated by the soft glow of bioluminescent organisms, they embark on a mesmerising odyssey, delving into the secrets of the deep sea.

The aesthetic experience of 《Aquatics》is immersive and soothing. Yet, there is something eerie about the man-made imitation of living beings. In this sense, 《Aquatics》can be seen as both a utopia and a dystopia, offering a glimpse into how artificial ecosystems might replace real life in the future.
